Would you like to try knitting something different but not absolutely mind boggling? Something fun and that makes for great TV knitting? Then this is the workshop for you!

The Dotted Rays shawl knitting pattern by Stephen West (WestKnits) is one of my all-time favourite shawl knitting patterns. I've knit five to date!

What’s it all about?

This arched shawl begins at the center with only a few stitches while yarn over increases quickly expand the shape. Garter stitch short row wedges add length to one side forming rays that gradually increase in size. The repetitive knit stitches and rhythmic short rows are easy to work while still keeping your interest, a perfect travel project! Built in I-cord edges and an I-cord bind off outline the entire shape for a clean finish. Choose one yarn or use different stash and scrap yarns for a striped effect.

The workshop will be held in our Studio at Unit 12, The Buttermarket in Enniskillen and will last approximately 2.5 hours. By end of it, you'll be well on your way to finishing your first Dotted Rays shawl!

During the workshop you'll learn how to do a garter tab cast on, i-cord edging and work double yarnovers to create the eyelets.

The workshop will include the Dotted Rays pattern and all the tea/coffee/biscuits you can handle. Please let us know when booking if you have any special dietary requirements.

You’ll need to bring at least 100g of sock/4ply/fingering weight yarn and a 4mm circular knitting needle at least 80cm in length for the small size. More yarn will be required for the larger size shawl. The pattern states approximately 1.5 x 100g skeins of fingering weight yarn is required for the small shawl but I’ve always just used one skein, skipping a pattern repeat towards the end as dictated by how much yarn is left!

I’ve also knit this in DK weight yarn along with a 5mm needle. You’ll need around 200g of DK yarn if you choose to knit this size.

There are no hard and fast rules around needle size. The larger the needle, the more drapey your shawl will be. A larger needle will of course use more yarn, so please bear this in mind when making your choices!

If you haven’t anything suitable in your stash, you can buy yarn and needles in-store with 10% discount for those knitters attending this  workshop.

100% deposit is required at time of booking. Please provide your contact details when booking in case we need to contact you!

Workshop is limited to a maximum of six.

Enniskillen’s Buttermarket is fully accessible and there’s a cafe and public toilets within the courtyard. There’s also lots of pay and display parking available in Down/Market street and surrounding areas.
